Autism and Parenting

Parents of children with autism often face overwhelming challenges, including difficulties with speech and communication, sensory processing, and social interactions. These concerns may be accompanied by coordination issues, attention deficits, or developmental delays, which can signal underlying neurological differences often associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

As the mother of an autistic child, I deeply understand the complexities and emotional struggles that come with this journey. My personal experience drives my commitment to supporting parents and children by helping them navigate these challenges with resilience and strength. I focus on empowering families to embrace their unique journey, fostering growth and understanding in the face of adversity.

My work includes providing individual therapy and organizing group sessions tailored to the needs of parents and their children. These sessions create a supportive environment where parents can share experiences, learn new coping strategies, and build a community of mutual encouragement. By combining personal insight, clinical practice, and research, I aim to bridge the gap between scientific understanding and everyday parental experience.

Research

Alongside my therapeutic work, I conduct research at the University of Derby. My published study, “Like Something Supernatural in Your House”: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to Explore the Experiences and Psychological Challenges of Parents Raising Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (BMC Psychology, 2025), sheds light on the profound psychological challenges parents face, highlighting themes of uncertainty, emotional strain, and resilience. This research not only validates parents’ experiences but also informs the practical and compassionate strategies I bring into therapy and training.
